How do I mix shea butter with essential oils?

If you're reading this article I'm not going to bore you with all the magical and amazing benefits of shea butter because I know you already know all about it!

I'm also fairly certain you  know how to use your shea butter or at least have a good understanding of how to use it. So we'll go right into it how to mix essential oils to your shea butter.

Being able to combine your essential oils with shea butter gives you the best of both worlds because you get the skin nourishing properties of shea butter while being diffused with essential oils.

I find that essential oils tend to diffuse quickly and easily in warmer temperatures and environments. While working with essential oils in shea butter, you want to retain as much of the aromatic properties as well as the therapeutic properties of the essential oils to remain for as long as possible in your mixture, so here are two ways to go about it.

First, I allow the shea butter to melt down completely, then I add my liquids (oils). Since the oils are always cooler this allows the temperature of the shea butter to drop by a few degrees. At this point you can then add in your essential oils to the mix. Next is to gently stir the melted shea butter and then transfer to a container with a lid to reduce any chances of evaporation, place that in the freezer or refrigerator and allow to set.

The second option if you are not melting down your shea butter but want to whisk it straight away is to add your essential oils bit by bit and whisk on a low setting so that you don’t agitate the molecules too much by generating heat which can make you lose scent to the atmosphere in the process. If you can, better to whisk the shea butter to the fluffy texture you would like it to be then ‘fold in’ the essential oil to your shea butter as you would if you were baking. This will ensure that your essential oils not only mix well with your shea butter but that you also conserve the therapeutic and aromatic properties of your essential oils while only needing small amounts.
